W:Do you know what's on tonight?

M:Hero. It is said that many famous actors and actresses act in this film. And it is quite popular in our country.

W:Are you going to see it this evening? M:Yes, I will. Text 2

M:How do you like Professor Johnson's talk?

W:Wonderful! His classroom is always full of students. Text 3

W:I can't decide whether to buy a new bicycle or try to find a second-hand one. M:A new bicycle will cost you a lot of money. I don't think it is worth doing that.

Text 4

M:What do you think of Richard?

W:He always helps us whenever we are in trouble. Text 5

M:I paid twenty dollars for three books and I think they're very expensive. W:Expensive? I would have paid thirty dollars. Text 6

W:I hear there is a very good play on TV this evening. Are you going to watch it?

M:Me? I would rather go to the cinema than watch TV. W:How is that? Aren't you interested in TV plays?

M:I don't enjoy TV plays at all. There are always too many advertisements on TV.

W:Are you going to see a film at the cinema? M:Of course. Text 7

W:So Peter, you're going to tell us how to make a million. M:Well, to go back to the beginning, I went to study design after leaving school. And I was there for two years, and when I left college I decided to see a bit of the world.

W:Where did you go?

M:Well, a friend of mine got a job in Brazil, so I decided to go and have a look at Brazil. And I had a wonderful time. The social life was very good, and I made a lot of wonderful friends. Some of these friends then decided to drive up to the USA. It seemed like a very good opportunity to see some more of the world, so I joined them. But we had a terrible experience in Central America. We were stolen away by force by bad men, believe it or not, and it was two years before I got away from it.

W:What an extraordinary experience! Text 8

M:What did you think of the movie? W:I thought it was great. I loved it. M:You did? I thought it was terrible. W:Why didn't you like it?

M:For one thing, it was too violent. There was too much fighting. W:But, Curtis, it was a martial arts movie! M:I know, but the story was silly, too.

W:The stories are always silly in those movies. M:Then why do you like them?

W:They're exciting. And I like the star. M:Yeah, but he can't act! W:He doesn't have to act. Those guys are in great condition. Really! It's almost

like watching ballet!

M:I just had a great idea! His next movie should be Swan Lake! Text 9

M:I'm tired of the TV these days, too much fighting and killing. I really would like a change.

W:How about going to see the films? Recently there is a series of American classic films in the Grand Cinema. Most of the films are the great ones produced between the 1930s and the 1940s.

M:Oh? That's interesting. Anything worth seeing?

W:Let me see. Today is Saturday. Yes, at 3:30 p. m. there is a film The Lions in the Winter. How about that?

M:Well, I'm not interested in it. I prefer something closer to real life. W:In that case, I think that this one might interest you, The Trouble with Happy. It is a love story about a couple, with a happy ending that pleases everybody.

M:That sounds nice. When is it being shown?

W:Tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. in the Grand Cinema. Actually I'm not particularly interested in it. Anyway, I'll go with you, for I don't want to be alone at home.

M:OK, let's go then. Text 10

Movies are the favourite entertainment of many people. When a person becomes a movie star, everyone knows that person. Some movie stars are known for a few films and others for many films. Katherine Hepburn has made more than 50 films. Just being in a film does not make a person famous. It must be a good film and the part must be a major role. Katherine starred in the film On Golden Pond with Henry Fonda and his daughter Jane Fonda. In the film she was a retired mother and wife facing the problems of old age. It was a perfect performance. In many films Katherine's acting skills are so good that she becomes just like the person she is acting, and that's the reason why the audience like her so much even today.

A homeless man walked up to me and asked me for a coin. “I'll give you a coin if you tell me your story.” He laughed, “You'll give me a coin for my story?” I lay the coin in front of him and corrected myself, “No, here's the coin but it would be nice to hear your story.” Then I sat down next to him and waited.

“I was once a sniper (狙击手) in the army,” he said. “I was supposed to shoot down the enemy from the distance.” I listened carefully to him. He wore dirty old clothes. He told me how he used to hunt with his family. He had his own way of respecting animals by not killing more than he needed. When the army came knocking on his door, he felt proud and joined up. All those years of developing his hunting skills could now serve a larger purpose—to defend us from the bad guys. He set out to fight in Iraq.

However, soon he became bored with the killings. “I was a sniper but I never really killed anyone,” he said. “One day they asked me to shoot a lady from the distance. I saw kids near her and my hands were on the trigger (扳机). But I couldn't fire. She wasn't doing anything to anyone. It just didn't make any sense to me.”

The story went on until he described finally being put into prison for 180 days for this event. “I have no regrets,” he said. “I may be homeless now, but I never
