I’m Li Hua, an exchange student from China. I’m more than interested in Debating Club at Weekends and I’d like to join it.

I have been learning English for nearly 10 years and I 'm really fond of it. When I was in China, I often joined in the English corner, chatting with English-lovers, debating on some topics and I once won the first place in a nation-wide English Debating competition. I think I’m open-minded, friendly and easy-going and above all, I really enjoy making friends with people from all over the world.

I would be very happy if I can be admitted into the club. Looking forward to your reply. Best wishes.

Yours Li Hua

M: Have you got your Christmas shopping done yet?

W: Almost. I got a watch for my husband, a tie for my brother, and I will buy a book on coin collections for my dad because he likes collecting coins. (Text 2)

M: I placed the order almost a week ago. Why hasn't the package arrived yet? W:Iguess there are not enough deliverymen in China during the Spring Festival. (Text3)

M: My parents are coming to see my apartment this weekend. I need your help. W: I'd like to help you clean your apartment, but I already have plans. M: Relax. I just want to borrow your dishes. (Text 4)

M: Sarah, have you had a chance to buy that novel you wanted?

W: Actually I've already got it. I visited at least five bookstores yesterday and finally found a copy in our school library.

M: Lucky you! I've been looking forward to reading it. W:It's in my study. I'll go and get it if you'd like to borrow it. ( Text 5)

W: I've been waiting all week for this concert. Do you want to go with me? M: But the tickets are really expensive.

W: Don't worry. With our student discount, the tickets will be really cheap. M: Oh, I'm afraid I've left my student ID at home. (Text6)

M: Next week I'm going to New York to sign a business contract. What would you suggest I see while I'm there?

W: You should definitely see the UN building, and from there you could walk overto Broadway and see a movie or drama.

M: How about New York s universities? I'm especially interested in leaming about the schools there and the courses they offer.

W: Columbia University and New York University are two of the best schools in the city. I'm sure they offer excellent courses.

M: Do you have a map of the city?

W: Yes, I have one right here, in fact. I can give you this one, but I'd also suggest that you stop at the visitor's office near the train station. They will have good up-to-date maps and they can give you more tourist information about the city. (Text 7)

(Text10)Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming along. I'm afraid there is a serious matter that I'm hoping we can clear up as soon as possible. Last night, someone broke into the staff room and a number of things are now missing. I have already spoken to the police and I trust things will go no further. The police believe that whoever is responsible for the theft is probably a member of this college. Now, the things that are missing.. First of all, a valuable clock which was presented to the college over a hundred years ago has disappeared. The clock cannot easily be sold as it has the name of the ollege on the front and would immediately be recognized. A painting of the college by Arnolfini has also been stolen and again this would be easily recognized as it shows the main college buildings. Now, whoever took these objects also broke

open the cupboard in the staff room and took some antique glasses, eight altogether. These were given to the college many years ago by another director. They could easily get broken and although they were insured they could not be replaced. I'm glad to say the bottles of drink were not removed. They were bought from an antique market. Not surprisingly, both the Tv and video recorder have been taken. But perhaps the most worrying of all, is the fact that the end-of-term examination papers have been stolen from a filing case. If these papers can't be marked, everyone in the college will suffer. Now if you can help, or if you have seen or heard anything that...
