Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.

In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for expensive things, like clothing or electronics.

Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.

Allowances give children a chance to experience three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or give it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it. Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: They have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowance can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children learn about personal finance. A savings account is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest (复利).

Compounding works by paying interest on interest. So, for example, one dollar invested at

two percent interest for two years will earn two cents in the first year. The second year, the money will earn two percent of one dollar and two cents, and so on. That may not seem like a lot. But over time it adds up.

Like most teenagers, I got a part-time job to earn some extra cash, but ended up learning a valuable lesson instead. I started working at a department store four months ago. My first day on the job made me feel very nervous and worried because everything was hands-on training. After what felt like a very long day of work, I realized that I had only worked for four hours at $6.75 an hour! I continued going to work, feeling cheated for all the back-breaking work I was assigned to complete for a minimum wage.

Working in the department store has changed my life for the better. It has made me realize that I can’t do that for the rest of my life. I refuse to. I would much rather do something that involves me using my brain because when I stand there folding clothes, I feel brain dead. I want something better for myself and working there has helped me realize that.

Since I’ve started working, my grades have improved a lot. I am proud to say I earned a lot last term. I have devoted much of my time to applying for financial aid and a scholarship. Knowing that I don’t want to end up folding sweaters has motivated me to focus more on the future. Before, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know if I was even going to college. My horrible job was a real eye-opener for me. I want something better for myself. 68. The author did a part-time job with the purpose of _______. As the River Thames weaves its way through London from Westminster Pier to Greenwich, there is history around every bend and the best way to see the sights and beauty is from the deck of one of the City Cruises Luxury Riverliners.

The trip to Greenwich, a World Heritage Site, takes just over an hour. Visiting Greenwich is an ideal day out, and you can learn about Britain’s seafaring history at the National Maritime Museum (free entry), discover the home of Greenwich Mean Time, visit the famous Cutty Sark tea clipper and explore the numerous antique (古董) shops and markets (Thursday to Sundays only). There are lots of riverside pubs where you can enjoy an inexpensive lunch.

On departure at 5:20 pm you can enjoy watching London’s infamous rush hour from the free-flowing Thames. It’s a good idea to sit on the same side of the boat as you did on your outward journey to ensure that you don’t miss any of the sights or endless photo opportunities. Reservations for dinner at Covent Garden Grill are at 7:30 pm, which leaves enough time to either watch some expert buskers (卖艺人) in the Covent Garden Piazza, or enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail at the Covent Garden Grill. The Covent Garden Grill (as the name suggests) is in London’s Covent Garden and is intimate yet bright. The grill is popular with both locals and tourists without ever becoming oppressively packed.
