We have recently heard a great deal about the bad effects of computers on our social and economic organization. In industry, computers mean automation, and

automation means unemployment.Computers in the USA have already begun to displace workers whose tasks are simple. The variety of jobs, formerly done only by humans, that the machine can perform more rapidly, accurately, and economically, increases with each new generation of computers. If we follow this trend,we will be faced with mass unemployment for all but a handful of highly trained professionals, who will then be more powerful and overworked than they are now.

What can we do about it?It is foolish to dream of changing history. We cannot pass laws forbidding the advancement of science and technology. The computing machines are here, and they will grow because engineers want to build them, and politicians want their help in the process of government. In short, they will develop and become popular because they enable us to complete tasks that could never before have been undertaken,no matter how many unskilled laborers we might have set to work.Computers will continue to increase our intelligence for just the same reason that engines continue to strengthen our muscles. The question we must ask is not whether we shall have computers or not,but rather, since we have had them, how we can make the most humane and intelligent use of them.

1. According to the passage,________can best indicate the author's attitude towards

the computer.

A.very worried C.very hopeful

B.little doubting D.rather excited

2. The author suggests that the computer will continue to grow because________.

A.it is foolish and impossible to control B.no law can forbid the advancement of science C.it can enable us to complete ordinary tasks

D.it can be and has been put to good use

答案 D

3. If computers continue to develop,________will be most unlikely to be badly

influenced.

A.unskilled workers

B.highly trained professionals D.government workers

C.ordinary technicians

解析 从第一段倒数第二行but a handful of highly trained professionals, who will then be more powerful and overworked than they are now.看出:一小部分受过电脑高级培训的专业人士将会比现在更忙碌、更强有力,他们最不会受到失业的影响。

答案 B

4. The main idea of the last paragraph is that________.

A.the most humane and intelligent use can be made of computers B.computers will continue to increase our intelligence C.we are able to build faster and advanced computers D.computers will develop and become popular

答案 A

B

Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite

or to sail a boat.Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources(来源),as well as one of the oldest.Evidence shows that windmills(风车)began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC.They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s,when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.

For many centuries, people used windmills to grind(磨碎)wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s,people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However,by the 1940s,when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.

During the 1970s,people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity.People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs.Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.
