not, not everyone, not always, not everything, not every, not both, both? not, not everyday, not altogether, not everywhere等。比如练习中的第三句就属于部分否定句: Working is not always convenient, and there will be times when you’d prefer to be doing something else. 部分否定的翻译比较简单，常常翻译为“并非所有，并不是都”。这一句可译为：工作并不总是方便的，有时候你倒宁可在做别的事情。又如： It’s not difficult to get money for research or at least it’s not always difficult. 获得研究的资金并不困难，或至少并不总是那么困难。 Not all misunderstandings result in highways being closed or passengers flying to the wrong continent. 并非所有的误会都会导致公路关闭或乘客飞错大陆。 The two messages cannot be both true. 这两条信息不可能都是正确的。 Not all lawyers have large incomes. 并非所有的律师都有高收入。 All reward programs are not equal. 并非所有的奖赏方案都是相同的。 练习中的第二句和第四句是练习英语含双重否定结构句子的翻译。双重否定是指一个句子中出现两个表示否定的词语，如第二句中can’t? without。含双重否定结构的英语句子可以翻译成汉语的双重否定，也可以根据上下文翻译为汉语的肯定句，一般取决于哪种形式更符合汉语的习惯表达。如第二句：But installing a green roof can’t be done without a lot of planning and information.可以译为：但安装绿色屋顶没有大量的规划和信息是做不成的。又如: Her divorce was not unexpected. 她的离婚并不出人意料。/ 她的离婚是意料之中的事。 Anxiety about taking tests is not uncommon. 对参加考试感到焦虑是常有的。/对参加考试感到焦虑并非罕见。 Mr. Brown said elections would not have been possible without UK forces. 布朗先生说没有英国军队的存在就不可能有选举。 But nothing at all could have been done without their support. 如果没有他们的支持，根本就不可能取得什么成绩/可能什么都做不成。

英语表示完全否定的词语有never, no, not, none, nobody, nothing, nowhere, neither, nor, not at all等。练习中的第一句练习完全否定的翻译。又如： But never have we been offered such an opportunity. 可是从来没有人曾给过我们这样一个机会。 Larry’s no friend of mine. 拉里根本就不是我的朋友。 None of the townspeople had ever seen such weather. 没有一个城里的人曾见到过这样的气候。 练习中的第五句练习的是翻译过程中否定成分的转换，把否定主句的谓语转换为否定宾语从句的谓语。在英语中，否定词与像think，believe和suppose这类动词构成的结构，并且后面带从句时，形式上是对主句谓语动词的否定，实际上否定的是从句的谓语动词，因此在翻译时需把否定转移到从句，这样才符合汉语的表达习惯。又如： I don’t think it’s because they don’t know how. I think it’s because it’s counter-productive. 我想这并不是因为他们不知道怎么做，而是因为这么做会适得其反。 I don’t suppose the painting will ever be worth a thousand dollars. 我想这画不会值1 000美元。 I don’t think he will want to say anything to the media. 我认为他不愿意向媒体说任何东西。 练习中第六句含有“more than? can”的结构，它形式上是肯定的，但具有否定意义，在意义上相当于英语的can not?，译为“简直不，无法，难以”： The blow is more than words can tell. 这打击远非言语所能表达。 下面再提供一些例子供教学参考： The impact they’ve had on my confidence is more than words can describe. 他们对我信心的影响是言语无法描述的。 The costs associated with the defense is more than many defendants can bear. 与辩护相关的费用远非许多被告所能承受。 下面的一些肯定形式但表示否定意义的词语和结构也可以向学生介绍： Cheryl is far from perfect. 谢丽尔远不算完美。 The process was anything but simple.

Practical writing: 找工作需要简历，这是给招聘单位的“见面礼”，也相当于“推销”自己的“广告”，因此在某种意义上说，简历写得好坏，关系到应聘的成败。 虽然简历有各种写法，但大部分简历都应该包括以下一些内容：个人资料[personal information: name, address and contact information (telephone number and/or email address), date and place of birth, nationality, married or single (有些人认为简历中写年龄和婚姻状况现在已不常见了)]、教育背景(education)、工作经历(previous employment and work experience)、外语和计算机使用能力(knowledge of English and of other languages, computer skill)、通过的考试(examination passed, especially if internationally recognized)、曾获得的奖励(awards)、社会活动(activities)、兴趣爱好(interests & hobbies)、推荐人(references)等。 在写教育背景和工作经历时要注意将最近的列在最前。对刚毕业的学生来说，可以写自己哪一年在哪所高中毕业，也可以列出所学课程(courses taken)。如果申请某个特定的工作岗位，你的简历应强调与该岗位相关的能力。
