Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A's and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as \. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father's friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son's funny facial expressions. Gone was my father's critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?

The next day dad took out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I'm at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I'm delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

Recently, I was asked to go to my students' cross-country meet(越野赛). At first, I did

not know if I should go because honestly, I am not the biggest sports fan of any kind. However, I would not never regret going there after I watched it.

第1页,共17页

Although many people don't consider cross-country a sport, I disagree. Cross-country beginners have to work out and exercise just like you do for any other sport. They run for hours and miles. In fact, many sports consider running as their punishment for bad behaviour(行为), but I wonder what the coach would do to punish a cross-country beginner. Honestly, I never knew how much fun I would have watching many kids run for fun. They kept running no matter how tired they were. The public would not only just cheer for the runners they know but also cheer for all runners, fast and slow. When the students heard you cheering them on, or even just clapping to encourage them, they would start sprinting (鼓掌)and try their best to cross the finish line.

My students did a wonderful job and I took many pictures of them. When they found that someone from their school came to see them, they were very exacted. Cross-county is actually pretty great and I definitely want to support cross-country later in my teaching career. What I will do next is to go the meets with my students.

5. We can learn from the second paragraph that cross-country beginners ______ .

A. often exercise for a short time at first B. need to train hard through running

C. will not be punished because of bad behaviour(行为) D. never exercise mile after mile

6. What is the meaning of the underlined word \? ______

A. Taking a break B. Becoming shy

C. Running as fast as possible D. Shouting as loudly as possible

7. How will the author support cross-country? ______

A. By cheering on the runners B. By guiding the runners C. By attending the meets

D. By running along with the runners

C

Most people think greyhounds(灰狗)practise a lot during their free time. But they are actually quite lazy! Greyhounds are good at fast races but not long-distance running. They do need regular exercise but they like to run for a short burst and then get back on the bed or a comfortable seat. Another misunderstanding is that greyhounds must be aggressive(好斗的)because they are big in size. In fact greyhounds love people and are gentle with children. Greyhounds can live for 12-14 years but usually only race for two or three years, and after that they make great pets. They don't need a lot of space, don' t make a lot of noise, and don' t eat a lot for their size. Normally, greyhounds can be as tall as 90cm. There is, however, a small-sized greyhound, which stands only 33cm. Greyhounds come in a variety of colors. Grey and yellowish-brown are the most common. Others include black, white, blue, red and brown or a mix of these. Greyhounds have smooth body coats, low body fat and are very healthy. Because they're slim(苗条的)they don't have the leg problems like other dogs the same height. But they do feel the cold, especially since they would much rather be at home in bed than walking around outside.

8. The main purpose of the passage is to ______ .

A. tell people two misunderstandings about greyhounds. B. let people know more about greyhounds.

第2页,共17页

C. explain why greyhounds are aggressive. D. describe greyhounds of different colors.

9. What can we infer from the passage? ______

A. People love greyhounds because of its aggression. B. Greyhounds like staying in bed all day.

C. People consider greyhounds as the best guard dogs. D. Greyhounds need some exercise outdoors.

10. Why does the author say that greyhounds make great pets? ______

A. They are big in size.

B. They live a very long life.

C. They can run races for some time. D. They are quiet and easy to look after.

11. According to Para. 4, if you keep a pet greyhound, it is important ______ .

A. to keep it slim B. to keep it warm

C. to take special care of its legs

D. to take it to animal doctors regularly

三、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)

We shouldn't judge a person by their appearance but we do. In fact, the experts say that when we meet someone for the first time we make a decision about what that person is like in three seconds. (1) One of the most important things we look at is clothes, but it isn't the brand of clothes that people wear that is important. The important thing is to wear the right clothes for the right places.

Schools have always understood this and a lot of them ask their students to wear a

uniform. Why? A lot of teachers think a uniform makes students feel that they are part of their school and that their uniform helps them to be serious about their studies. (2) If all the students wear uniforms, they can't judge each other because of their clothes. It also stops gossips about who or what is fashionable.

(3) We all have fixed ideas about what the people in a certain job should wear. If we visit a doctor, we hope to see respectable clothes under the doctor's white coat. (4) Police officers wear uniforms to make themselves easily identifiable to non-police officers. In fact, a lot of companies have dress codes for their staff (员工)because they know that the customers hope to see them dressed in certain types of clothes.

But can our clothes really tell people what we are like? (5) When people see us in the right clothes, they think we are serious about what we are doing. Furthermore, if we are clean, smart and polite, people will believe us a lot.

A.Maybe not, but they can show our attitude to what we are doing at the moment. B.Some of the teachers hold different opinions. C.But what do we look at?

D.Teachers say that uniforms can help in other ways too. E.Our clothes stand for our attitude.
