Text 1

W: Hi, Bob, have you heard that three more people will be sent to Europe besides those two? M: Oh, really? They are so lucky. I wish I could be sent there, too.

Text 2

W: Can you drive a little faster? M: Sorry. The speed limit is 40 miles an hour here. Text 3

M: I called you last night. Why didn’t you return my call? W: You called? Text 4

W: It is said that you are going to spend your holidays in London this year. M: No, anywhere but London. In fact, I feel like seeing the country, not a crowded and noisy capital. Text 5

M: Are you ready for your final exam next week? W: Not really. The reading list is too long, but I’ll take the test anyway.

Text 6

W: My bag is missing. Has anybody handed one in? M: No. What kind of bag is it? W: It is a shoulder bag. M: What colour is it? W: It is brown and it is made of leather. M: What was in the bag? W: There was a purse and two keys. M: Was there anything else in it? W: Yes. There was a letter with my name on it. M: Good. If anyone hands it in, I’ll inform you right away. W: Thank you very much. M: You’re welcome. Don’t worry. It will soon turn up.

Text 7

M: Er ... a friend told me that you have dance classes here. W: That’s right. M: Can you give me some information about days and times, please? W: Yes, there are four classes a day, from Monday to Saturday, nothing on Sunday. M: Yeah. W: The first one is from 8: 30 to 9: 30. Then there is one in the afternoon from 2: 30 to 3: 30. M: Right. W: There are two classes in the evening. One is from 6: 30 to 7: 30 and the other from 7: 30 to 8:30. M: I think I’ll take the 6: 30 to 7: 30 one then.

Text 8 W: Here’s your coffee, Mark. M: Thanks. W: So how are things? You’ve finished your exams already, haven’t you? M: Yes, we finished them yesterday. Now I’m looking for a job. W: Seriously? M: Yes. I have to. I haven’t got any money. W: What kind of thing are you looking for? M: Maybe in a shop. The problem is I don’t know how to look for a job. W: Why don’t you look in the newspaper? M: That’s a good idea.

Text 9 M: What’s your trouble? W: I can’t tell exactly, but I don’t know whether our senses have anything to do with our health. M: Very much. Scientists say that making the most of our

senses when we are young can keep us healthy later on in life. W: Is that true? M: Yes. One reason why we become stressed and have high blood pressure is that we misuse our senses in our everyday life.W: I see. But should we develop all our senses or not? M: Yes, we should try our best to develop all our senses. W: But how? M: For example, while having dinner, listen to some enjoyable music rather than watching TV. While relaxing at home, have some flowers next to you that smell nice. W: What else can we do? M: While sleeping, wear a nightshirt that is pleasant to touch — it will make us sleep deeply. We all know sleeping well is very important because good sleep gives us the chance to dream. Dreams keep us young and healthy. W: Oh, I learn a lot. Thank you, doctor.

Text 10

In order to learn a foreign language, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it correctly and quickly. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language, and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to make sentences that are grammatically correct.

There is no easy way to be successful in language learning. A good memory is a great help, but it is not enough only to memorize rules from a grammar book. It is not much use learning long lists of words and their meanings by heart, studying the dictionary and so on. We must learn to use the language. If we are satisfied with a few rules we have memorized, we are not really learning the language. “Learn through use” is a good piece of advice for those who are studying a new language. Practice is important. We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

(One possible version) Dear Peter,

I’m writing to ask whether you could do me a favor.

I want to have a pen friend, hopefully a girl in her early twenties, and with interests similar to mine. I hope she is someone who is interested in traveling, swimming, and playing table tennis. Besides, it would be better for her to have a pet dog as I have kept one at home for some time. With such a pen friend, I think I can share with her our traveling experiences, our pleasure of taking care of pets, or whatever we have in common. And I believe I will also improve my

English and learn more about her country.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

28. B。devote ... to ... 56. B。根据短文第五段“We can make sounds only by making things vibrate.” 根据第一段中“She looked in the bag, and then she look at me ... she said slowly ...” 64. B。由短文第一段第一句“‘I would almost rather see you dead,’ Robert S. Cassatt, a leading banker of Philadelphia, shouted when his twenty-year-old eldest daughter announced that she wanted to become an artist.” 70. D。由短文第三段“When you feel scared but there doesn’t seem to be a clear reason, that’s called anxiety.”
